In the world of culinary arts, the UAE is renowned for its vibrant and diverse food scene. However, amidst the rich flavours and sumptuous dishes, there is an issue that often goes unnoticed - food waste. As part of its commitment to sustainability and responsible consumption, Winnow is proud to announce its partnership with Ne'ma, the National Food Loss and Waste Initiative in the UAE. As technical partner, Winnow will support Ne’ma with data, benchmarking and best practices for the HoReCa sector.
Ne'ma aims to deliver on the nation's commitment to combat over-consumption and promote sustainable living. It is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and Emirates Foundation, aimed at uniting key stakeholders from government, the private sector, NGOs, and communities to address food loss and waste across the entire value chain.
This initiative covers a wide spectrum, from farms and producers to distributors, retailers, restaurants, and households. Its primary objective is to challenge existing behaviours and attitudes, gradually fostering a national social norm around responsible consumption. By doing so, Ne'ma strives to reduce food loss and waste.
Winnow has been a part of the UAE's journey since 2017. With over 150 sites across the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, Winnow has already made a significant impact on curbing food waste. In 2022 alone, kitchens using our innovative technology saved clients over AED 10 million.
Our partnership with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) was a testament to our commitment to sustainability. In 2018 Winnow supported the launch of the national food waste pledge, a program that saved 7.4 million meals nationwide. This achievement not only highlighted the magnitude of the issue but also showcased the potential for positive change.
The collaboration between Winnow and Ne'ma is a significant milestone in the fight against food waste. We have joined forces to develop an API integration that enables Winnow users to directly contribute to the UAE's food waste baseline. This integration aligns with our shared mission to halve food waste by 2030, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal.
By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven insights, Winnow empowers chefs and kitchen staff to track, manage, and ultimately reduce food waste. Our technology identifies patterns, suggests improvements, and provides real-time feedback, enabling kitchens to operate more efficiently and sustainably.
As we move forward with this exciting partnership, we invite chefs, hoteliers, caterers and food establishments across the country to join us in the fight against food waste. Together, we can make a difference, one plate at a time.
